This coming Wednesday, March 9 is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Season of Lent.  Mass with the distribution of ashes will be at 8:00am and 6:30pm (bilingual with music).
Recall that on Ash Wednesday, All catholics above the age of 14 are required to abstain from meat.  Further, all catholics between the ages of 18 & 59 are required to fast.  As a general rule, "fasting" means that one would eat no more than one regular meal, with two other smaller meals that together would not equal a full meal.  Of course, a more strict fast and fasting by people over the age of 59 is a good spiritual exercise.  Each Friday during Lent remains a day of abstinence from meat.
During Lent, we will have the Stations of the Cross each Friday at 7:00pm, beginning this coming Friday, March 11th.  Come and meditate on the love of Christ for sinners.  Fr. Mark will hear confessions before the Stations during the last three Fridays before Good Friday.  More on that later.
Now would be a good time to take note of the 3 Deanery-wide Lenten Penance Services:
Wednesday, April 6 at Noon at St. Joseph Church, Jasper
Thursday, April 7 at 6:30pm at St. Joseph Church, Jasper
Sunday, April 10 at 4:00pm at St. Ferdinand Church, Ferdinand.
Speaking of Lent, don't forget our Lenten Parish Mission, March 26-29.  Fr. Eugene Hensell, OSB, will preach at the weekend Masses and then speak on three successive nights; Sunday, March 27 through Tuesday, March 29.  His theme will be "Major Moments in Jeses' Journey to the Cross: Reflections on the Passion narrative of the Gospels."  Fr. Eugene is a true scripture scholar, holding a doctorate in biblical studies, as well as a much sought after retreat director and speaker.  this will be a great preparation for Lent as well as a valuable study of God's revealed word!
